Porcelain whiteboards: when midrange makes sense

When I was in my early twenties, I adopted a buying philosophy: always go for the midrange product. The seed for this philosophy was planted early when, while I was in uni, I went to the USA as an exchange student.

The trip was my first time on a plane and I had certain expectations. Specifically, I wanted to watch a whole lot of movies. I was - and am - a serious movie buff, see. So, I wanted to start watching as soon as the plane left the ground and finish up right as we landed. I’d even sat down and figured out exactly how many movies I could fit into the substantial flight time.

As soon as I settled into my seat, I clicked through to my first choice, plugged in the headphones, and sat back ready for my marathon.

Then…

Massive disappointment.

The headphones the airline provided were shocking! I could barely hear the dialogue because all the noise in the cabin kept filtering through. When I looked around, I saw that most passengers had brought their own headsets.

I made up my mind then and there to buy my own quality headset for the return journey. During my exchange I went shopping. What I stumbled upon was a vast array of brands ... and prices.

Some of the higher-end headphones I tested cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I found myself asking: was the claimed improvement in quality really worth it?

I decided that, for me, that answer was: no. I ended up going for a $60 pair and was more than happy with the purchase. The flight home was my movie buff dream: great flicks and great sound.

Not only could I hear the dialogue perfectly, I was also pretty pleased with the saving I’d made through not buying the top-of-the-range headphones. Yes, there might have been an increase in sound quality, but I didn’t think that was worth a whole 200 American dollars more!

Anyway, that was 15 years ago now, but the midrange lesson stuck. Fast forward to 2019 and earlier this year, I rented a new office for my business. The building was nice but it needed a total refit. I’m talking new office partitions, new furniture and… new whiteboards.

When it came to the whiteboards, I had a decision to make: what sort should I buy?

Should I opt for…

  • The cheapest type: melamine?
  • The most expensive: glass?
  • Or the midrange: porcelain?

I delved into researching the issue; I’d never bought a whiteboard before.

Straight away, I ruled out melamine. It’s a laminate coating that wears down much faster than other boards. Frequent use also leads to ghosting - a form of staining that happens over time as the marker ink builds up. I knew my whiteboards would be used a lot, so melamine wasn’t a viable option.

Glass whiteboards, meanwhile, are the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of whiteboards. They’re tough, durable and will never streak or ghost. They come in a wide range of colours, including clear. You can also use a variety of markers with them - liquid chalk, dry erase, wet-erase and so on. The downside, of course, was price. Glass whiteboards are top-of-the-line and their price tag reflects that.

Yes, the glass whiteboards were super-impressive, but was I going to get enough bang for my buck?

My final consideration was the midrange option: porcelain whiteboards.

The white ceramic is incredibly durable and is far more resistant to stains, dents and scratches than melamine. They also have a substantial lifespan - the 25-year warranty is well earned - and I liked the fact they were magnetic.

Decision time!

Melamine was out and while glass was undoubtedly high-quality, I just couldn’t justify the price. Which is how I ended up falling back on my old philosophy: shop the midrange.

My story doesn’t end there. While I do opt for midrange products, I always aim for high-end service. And I can assure you that the ‘Rolls Royce’ standard of whiteboard service can be found through WhiteboardsOnline.

The company came highly recommended and from the first phone call to the final installation, their reputation for excellence was proven entirely justified. I wouldn’t even think of buying a whiteboard from anyone other than Whiteboards Online.
